Pediatric Physical Therapy

   
 

 

Therapists perform activities to improve:

  • Balance

  • Strength

  • Walking

  • Coordination

  • Gross Motor

  • Changing positions

 

 

 

Childhood movement disorder

 

  Poor head control after three months of age
  Stiff/rigid arms and legs, or floppy/limp body posture
  Inability to sit up without support by eights months of age
  Use of only one side of the body, or only the arms, to crawl
  Difficulty sitting and/or standing without support
  Frequent loss of balance leading to falls
  Inability to jump, skip, hop or run with skill similar to peers
  Difficulty with hand-eye coordination tasks such as throwing and catching balls
  Tendency to walk on toes

 

 
Pediatric physical therapy will help children overcome disabling conditions by assisting developmental progress and teaching them to become independent.
Therapists screen children free of charge to identify those who may benefit from physical therapy.  If a need is identified, a doctor’s referral will be necessary.  An evaluation and plan of care will be developed.

Why is Physical Therapy recommended?

Physicians recommend physical therapy following a serious injury, illness or surgery.  Physical therapy provides benefits for many problems including the following:

R     Difficulty walking
R     Back or neck pains/injuries
R     Injury from a motor vehicle accident
R     Rehab after surgery, including joint replacements
R     Muscle or skeletal pain
R     Sports-related injuries (fractures, sprains, etc.)
R     Work-related injuries (repetitive motion, etc.)
R     Loss of motion or strength
R     Balance disorders
R     Poor endurance
R     Cardiac problems
R     Chronic headaches
R     Decreased function due to stroke, brain injury or debility
 
   

Physical Therapist Training:     Physical therapists have graduated from an accredited program in physical therapy.   Physical Therapist Assistants have graduated from an accredited two year program.   All physical therapists and therapist assistants must pass a national examination and be licensed in the State of Iowa.

   
Referrals:    Physical therapy referrals are made by physicians, audiologists, psychologists, other medical personnel, daycare centers, and families.  Once a referral is made, orders will be coordinated through a primary care physician.
