Communication and
swallowing disorders can result from head injuries, neurological
disorders, cleft palate, voice misuse, cerebral palsy, lack of
appropriate early speech and language interaction, incorrectly learned

| When speech-language abilities are impaired, adults have difficulty communicating with others. The Speech Pathologist treats speech, language, and swallowing disorders and assist adults to understand and compensate for their communication or swallowing problems. | ||
|
What training do Speech Pathologists have? Speech Pathologists are trained to provide clinical services to persons of all ages. They have Master Degrees, Certificates of Clinical Competence from the American Speech and Hearing Association, and are licensed by the State of Iowa. Speech Pathology assistances have a Bachelor's Degree and are registered with the licensing board. |

Referrals: Speech therapy referrals are made by physicians, audiologists, psychologists, other medical personnel, daycare centers, and families. Once a referral is made, orders will be coordinated through a primary care physician. |
